Exploring to the east and west

Skagafjörður is convenient for day trips to investigate what our neighbouring regions have to offer. You will find a number of museums and exhibitions, as well as beautiful nature and a vibrant cultural life.

To the east, Siglufjörður boasts the award-winning Herring Era Museum (Síldarminjasafnið) and the Icelandic Folk Music Centre (Þjóðlagasetur), in addition to other attractions.

By heading a short distance west from Sauðárkrókur, over Þverárfjall, you can visit Skagaströnd with its famous country-western culture, and Kálfshamarsvík to its north. It is likewise just a short trip over to Blönduós, where you can for instance take a pleasant walk around Hrútey island or stop by the Textile Museum (Heimilisiðnaðarsafnið) or Sea Ice Exhibition Centre (Hafíssetrið). The latter is located in Hillebrandt’s House, one of Iceland''s oldest wooden buildings.

The website Icehorse.is gives an overview of horse rental and touring services in Skagafjörður and both of the Húnavatnssýsla counties.
