Town and country

Skagafjrur is situated near the middle of the North of the land, about 40 km long and 30 km wide between Hnsnes on the Skaga and Straumnes near Fljtavk, the narrowest point is 15km over near Reykjadiskur to the south. Centrally in the valley is Hegranes.

In the fjord itself are the islands, Drangey and Mlmey.

Sailing within the fjord is deep although there is a reef that carries from Hegranes out through the middle of the fjord and is visible at Holmasker.

The lowlands are mainly in the west except under the mountain Tindastoll. To the east there is some lowland are with high mountains. Natural harbours are few and far between. Where nature hasn't created a harbour, man has.

Towards the end of Skagafjrur is a wide valley, it is one of the largest in the country, wide and grassy, surrounded by picturesque mountains. The district is 50 km long but is divided at its southernmost end in two. Both valleys bear the name Skagafjordur however in saga times were known as Godalir - valleys of the gods.

East of Skagafjrur are majestic mountains but to the west minor ones. The main mountains are Tindastll 989 m, Mlifell to the south 1138 m and Glafeykir 853 m on the eastern side (Blnduhl). To the south are three valleys Svartrdalur (Blackriver valley), Vesturdalur (Western valley) and Austurdalur (Eastern valley) and to the east is the valley Norurrdalur (North river valley) which heads east from Blnduhl. To the east is Hjaltadalur, Kolbeinsdalur and other valleys which rise from the eastern side of the fjord. The main water is from the Hrsasvtn (District waters) which come from the two glacial rivers the east and west rivers which have their origins at Hofsjkull. They reach the sea in two distinct areas either side of Hegranes. Only one waterfall from these waters has a name that being Reykjafoss 14 m in Tungusveit.

The main lakes are Miklavatn in Borgasveit. Hfavatn at Hfastrnd and Miklavatn in Fljt. All of which are old ocean bays. The main type of rock in Skagafjrur is blue basalt however grey basalt and mberg can be found at Skagi peninsula. There are no volcanic areas except very old ones like Mlifell, however there is a lot of geothermal warmth. There is some lava to the north of Hofsjkull glacier. The most geothermal warmth is at Reykjum and Steinsstair and near Varmahl. Cultivated land is 1013 km2 and fertile areas abound. Woodland is minimal mainly to be found in Hrolleifsal in Fellshrepp. Salmon and trout are abundant in the rivers and lakes. Skagafjrur is 5230 km2

The district council of Skagafjrur was established in 1998 with the combination of 11 smaller district councils, there remains within the district one distinct council Akrahreppur.

At the time of unification there were 4078 inhabitants of which 2606 lived in the town of Saurkrkur.
