Hegranesviti Lighthouse – scenic route
More than one hiking trail leads to Hegranesvita, and this trail is considerably longer but offers spectacular views along the way. You walk from the old bridge at the western mouth of Héraðsvatn to the north to Hegranesvita. You can park your car west of the old Héraðsvatn bridge or by the statue of Jón Ósmann. You walk down to Furðuströnd past Jón Ósmann's shelter, which is how Jón named the beach, and walk up from the shore at its end. At first, the trail is somewhat indistinct along the eroded land by the cliff edge, but you soon enter old sheep tracks and you can walk along the banks all the way out to Hegranesvita. You walk past Naustavík, where there are ruins of old workshops. There is a lot of birdlife in the rocks and a beautiful view of Tindastól and the islands out in Skagafjörður. You walk the same way back.
