Get to know Drangey: Iceland's puffin paradise off the coast of Sauðárkrókur
Drangey, which rises steep and isolated from the sea, is one of the most dramatic natural phenomena in North Iceland. It lies just off the coast of Sauðárkrókur in Skagafjörður, and this tall palagonite cliff is home to thousands of seabirds — especially puffins, which attract nature enthusiasts, photographers, and adventurers every summer. Visiting Drangey is not just a sightseeing trip; it is an experience filled with bird watching, Viking stories, walks along the cliff edge, and unforgettable views.
Why Drangey is special?
Drangey rises about 180 meters high, a steep island full of bird colonies, including great northern divers, guillemots, kittiwakes, gulls, black guillemots, ravens, and even falcons. It is considered a paradise for birdwatching and offers visitors a rare opportunity to see a great northern diver up close, often just a few meters from the path leading up to the cliffs. The island also has deep historical significance. Drangey is famously associated with Grettir Ásmundarson, the strong, legendary outlaw Viking who used the island as a refuge. Locals share these ancient stories on the walk, adding a cultural layer to the natural beauty. Best time to visit Drangey The perfect time to visit is in summer, when terns and other seabirds nest on the cliffs: Daily trips run from June 1 to mid-August (August 15–20 depending on the service provider).
Trips in May and September can be arranged upon request, but they are not guaranteed and are subject to weather and demand.
A visit during this period guarantees lively birdlife, calm seas, and safe walking conditions along man-made trails that lead up to the island.
What you can do on Drangey:
1. Birdwatching (especially puffins!) Drangey is one of the best places in Iceland to see puffins, with thousands nesting on the cliffs. Visitors often get very close to puffins resting along the walking path. Reviewers on TripAdvisor call it "the best puffin-watching tour in Iceland," praising the large number of birds and the excellent guidance.
2. Beautiful
boat trip:
Visit begins with a boat trip from the harbor in Sauðárkrókur. The trip itself offers stunning views over the fjords and frequent wildlife sightings — some visitors even say they have seen whales along the way.
3.
Guided hike
to the peak:
A man-made trail winds along the cliffside and leads to a sweeping view over Skagafjörður. The hike includes narrow paths, steep climbs, and even a metal ladder — exciting for adventure seekers. For those who prefer not to climb, it is perfectly fine to stay in the small harbor or on the boat.
4. Learn Viking sagas:
Guides share stories of Grettir the Strong and how the island's natural resources were used in the past, making the experience partly a nature observation and partly a cultural expedition.
5. Enjoy a unique, intimate atmosphere:
Group sizes are small, which often creates a peaceful, almost private experience. Usually, only one group visits the island per day.
Trips Offered from Sauðárkrókur:
The main and most reputable service provider is Drangey Tours, a family-owned company located at the harbor in Sauðárkrókur. They specialize in a comprehensive guided experience that combines wildlife watching, hiking, storytelling, and sailing.
